Shantung Maple

Introduction

The Shantung Maple is a fabulous midsize ornamental tree that reaches 25’ tall with a 20’ spread. This is an ideal tree for small yards, street median and parking lot islands. It tolerates alkaline soils, drought, and windy situations. The Shantung ranks high among the list of autumn colored trees. It turns a beautiful golden yellow, eventually turning a blazing red. It is reminiscent of a Japanese maple but with greater toughness to full sun. It has been rated as one of the least damaged trees in an ice storm.

Planting

• Typically planted in 10, 15, 30, 45 or 65 gal containers
• B&B trees are specified in height (6’ – 8’ ht, etc) or caliper (3” cal., etc)
• Container trees can be double the price of B&B trees
• Plant container trees in late summer, if price allows
• Plant B&B trees if they were dug and cured in the winter
